Playing the Street Fighter 4 Demo of it i the IStores, I can honestly say it feels like having a shrunken PS3 in your pocket in terms of graphics and gameplay quality.
Now, all the IPOD 5 needs is a lareger (touch)screen, and as a pure entertainment device it could well take on the 3DS, couldn't it?

Not as long as it is multipurpose, no.
3DS is not a toy, it is a gaming device. A specialised gaming device. You only pay for what you want it for and nothing more.
Come back when you take away the mp3 player, added buttons for both hands for gaming, and in general make it for games only.
I own an old ipod. I have used and enjoyed an ipad. But why pretend a fake substitute should replace the real thing? If Apple wants to make a gaming handheld, then make a gaming handheld. Until then I will be waiting.
