This quote was bugging me, too.
There doesn't seem to be many characters in anime named "Iris".
I've heard that this was a reference to the movie "Gamera III", Iris being the monster who fought Gamera. I haven't seen the movie, so if someone can set us straight on that... that would be most helpful.
