I wonder if Rei is a child of one of the researchers of the engine and was on site during the accident which ended up "changing" her like Akane potentially was, but unlike Akane her change wasn't so benign.
It's true that Akane is un-naturally skilled for a someone who was a civilian not too long ago. Maybe there is indeed some foreshadowing after all.
Still looking forward to meeting Yellow next week.
