Actually it's heavily based in the mexican precolombine cultures (Aztecs and Maian? not sure of the english names). Al lot of the weird-sounding names in the series are actually Nahuatl words (the main language in the mexican empires), and some of them are related to the creation myths and other philosophy related topics, like "
IN IXTLI IN YÓLLOTL" which apears in one of the last episodes.
