I have a theory that is a variation of what you proposed.
I suspect that magic gets repelled because in the presence of personal reality, the "adaptation of the formulae of [another world] into [this world]" gets hi-jacked and become the "adaptation of the formulae of [personal reality] into [this world]".
Personal reality literally blocks off the channel that connects the whichever different world and makes itself the target which the magic formula would borrow the powers from. Thus by downloading powers that the formula wasn't programmed to accept, it leads to a malfunction.
