Honestly, I've never read through the manga, although I had them available - my mother is a big Tezuka fan. It was a bit hard to understand to my young mind.
Now, 15+ years later, after working on Hi no Tori, I'm glad I get to work on another series by him.
Now... The special we released is actually not OVA
There are 6+4 episode OVA released... This TV special was more or less a test to see how the fans would react. After a big success they saw in December airing of the special, they finally decided to make it into a series. Yay! And which leads to.... the TV series will have very similar cast as this special, so we can see the similar outcome that we're now all getting used to
