So it has finally begun, my most anticipated summer 2011 series. I've read the manga and I must say that I highly enjoyed the parodies, self-irony and breaking-the-fourth-wall jokes.
First Impressions
Spoiler for episode 01:
Content: Episode 01 basically covered chapters 01-04, if not more. It skips around a bit (e.g. chapter 17 was also animated) and progresses rather fast - a trifle too fast for my liking. I was very surprised that they already introduced the "Akari's lack of presence"-gag in episode 01 because usually, you'd let the audience become acquainted with the characters first and then slowly "remove" Akari's presence from the episodes without the audience noticing. That's the whole point of the -in my opinion- brillant joke after all. Unfortunately its effect was weakened because it was immediately given away in the first episode...the animators probably had their reasons. They certainly aren't in a rush, 51 chapters have been published so far and if they cover 4 chapters per episode, they should have enough time to cover all the material with 12 episodes.
Seiyuu/Sound: The main cast is voiced by rookies which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However the seiyuus seem to lack energy or that certain something which made Lucky Star and K-On! so enjoyable. I'm thinking about Katou Emiri (Kagami) or Toyosaki Aki (Yui) who are almost godesses compared to the strangely reserved performance of Ootsubo Yuka (Kyoko). On the other hand, this is her debut after all and she's only 18, so hopefully she'll improve as the series progresses - she has to, since Kyoko is THE show magnet. People always remember the crazy/energetic character, voicing a character like Kyoko could be a seiyuu's breakthrough. Right now Kyoko's voice doesn't quite match her personality, but that's just me being nitpicky. Apart from Kyoko, I also thought that Yui sounded a little weak. Perhaps it's because of her role as deadpan snarker, I'll have to wait for a couple more episodes. Seiyuu-wise, I thought Akari had the best performance which is ironic, considering the fact that she's the one slowly "fading into the background" xD
Next Episode: The second episode is going to be great with Toyosaki Aki as yuri-fangirl Chitose and Katou Emiri as tsundere Sakurako. I'm especially looking forward to the fights between the tsundere couple Sakurako and Himawari xD
In any case I'm sure that Yuru Yuri will quickly become one of my favorite moe shows. I enjoyed the manga more than the K-On! anime, its humor is not inferior to other moe shows and its big plus is the yuri (sub-)text
