Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo. Was expecting a run-of-the-mill ecchi harem comedy, and instead found extremely well-developed character-driven drama interlaced within.
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun: Was expecting a shoujo romance drama that would either bore me in a few episodes, or with some comedy to carry the show for me. The comedy is there, but I also found an extremely loveable and well-developed cast that I can't get enough of.
A weaker example but Acchi Kocchi: I was expecting a decent quality romance comedy 4-coma adaptation, similar to something like, say, A channel to its genre. Basically, watchable but not really memorable. I instead found a triple perfection of comedy, heartwarmingness, and cuteness overload.
