Gotta say, I always hated whenever someone said "this looks like Digimon!" when talking about newer generation Pokemon. However... this is definitely Digimon. It's basically the X-Evolution or whatever the hell they were called.
And from the sounds of it, you use a hold item and when you enter battle it changes your form. Kind of like that Grass/Flying legendary from Gen IV used (the flower thing... forget its name).
