Didn't Taurus say that the original design was really only useful for people like Tatsuya and Miyuki, who had crazy-high psion counts? As I recall from the technobabble descriptions at various points, each time you change directions it's a new activation sequence, and each activation sequence costs psions. Taurus believed he could get the hardware to do more of the processing to cut down on the amount of psions required per sequence, but it would still be a constant drain. We don't have any reason to believe he's come up with a version to do that yet, so Miyuki is probably using the original design, which is really only useful for her and Tatsuya if you want more than a couple of minutes of flight.
