It's managed to do it very well when done right, usually when they're based on ideas Mashima wanted to include in the first place. Like the time Ultear was quaking in her boots when she met Zeref, only to have Zeref lying on the ground in the next scene like a pansy; while Mashima tried telling us how it was plausible, the anime showed it instead. Or that subplot with Gajeel meeting himself in Edolas, that was some entertaining stuff, and plot-relevant to boot.
