I've always thought that SAO could potentially be a predecessor for the system used in The Matrix by the machines that controlled humans by imprisoning them within a virtual prison.
Very similar, I believe. Kinda scary if you think about it.
Instead of Kayaba, it is sentient machines holding the majority of the human race in a SAO like environment.
