I don't like Doylist explainations out of principle, though at least in the back of my mind I understand that at times it is the only explaination.
For example, those questions: Why did Sai say those things? Becasue he thought they were true.
How can someone love after 3 separation? Ever heard the phrase "time/distance makes the heart grow fonder." His crimes are all attemption, with very few successes. love makes people forgiving. Take your pick.
