I re-watched ep 1 last evening, and when listening to the ED I was racking my brains trying to remember where I had heard the very distinctive voice before and finally remembered Haibane Renmei. To my mind it works very well in ... umm ... helping to generate the slightly "non-human" element to the series that the presence of the fairies seem to lend (at least to my way of thinking). So in that sense it is very "effective" for me.
There is a something about this series that I enjoy, and that is the "un-spelled out" background info about the state of mankind. An element like this was used in both Sora no Woto and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, as examples of what I am trying to describe (at least examples that come to mind most immediately).
This one really looks like it will be interesting, though....
