I also like the MC, he stood up for his friend without resorting into any "special powers". He also tries to resist his urges whether the "harmed" party expresses her annoyance/discomfort or not. Despite his "methods" he honestly tries to help out in the best way possible, independent of circumstance.
The childhood friend was given more depth than the first few manga chapters that I have read, and her VA did an excellent job to flesh out her personality.
Finally, Risara doesn't behave all that different... this will probably be more obvious later, for now not voicing inner thoughts might be misleading, but it's a different medium, it's not that hard to work it out without resorting to some kind of direct exposition.
