in japanese and chinese language, a person can address an older male "onii-chan" (in japanese, and something else in chinese) regardless of whether they're related or not. however if they are related, then "onii-chan" must be used to acknowledge that the person is older, and calling a blood-related (older) brother by the first name is a sign of disrespect.
