It's not always a duty until death, it was mentioned that some Viralt just abandoned their Vanadis when they no longer deem they worthy of being one. It could be death, illness, with Sasha being the execption so far, or other reasons.
If Ellen started acting in a way not befitting a Vanadis, there is a chance Arifal will choose a new Vanadis in her stead, so she can 'voluntarily' step down so to say.
