Was it? The scene was different from the game, yes, but it was also approached differently. Alicia, having just defeated Max, realized her body is undergoing the same thing Selvaria was going through before she exploded, and pleads Welkin to go away. Welkin doesn't listen, and manages to drag Alicia back from imminent self detonation by the power of love.
It's a different way of delivering the scene, but it was still a damn good scene. Instead of going or the romance somewhat before the ending, they ended with the romance. It fits the storyline of the anime, and frankly, having it done somewhere sooner would have
seriously screwed up the storyline as it was.

Considering the people responsible for building the thing weren't even in the anime? Yes. It would have felt hugely out of place and make people go "Where did that airplane come from?"
