If you only looked at the screenshot showing Sheryl looking at Alto, then it would make perfect sense, judging from the perspective, for the VF to be flying in between the two ships. It's the outer view that doesn't make sense, since it's showing both ships to be farther away from each other than they should be.

Either Battle F and Quarter moved closer to each other at that particular scene (Sheryl looking at Ranka) or something else which can be attributed to the production and animation team.
