The manga explicitly states that "spiritual energy" is derived from the conscious mind and is trained by acquiring knowledge and experience. So it does not mean "soul" (though you can debate whether consciousness = soul, I won't participate in that debate, but you can still do it
), or at least not any distinct quality that a "soul" is generally described by.
