Spoiler:
Basically the RPG aspect of the game is that you move around in a map, defending your territory against invaders while claiming their land (in a sense). Your forces are represented by numbers 1 to 6, indicated by an arrow. Forces 1 to 4 are all made up of three slots: attacker, supporter and defender, and you need a characterto fill each of those slots.
There are various types of Spirits in the game, and needless to say, these will be your troops. Blue spirits are good at attacking and suppressing enemy Support magic, so they're usually frontline, and go to support roles when their attacks have been depleted. Red spirits are usually good at attack magic, so they'realways found in the Suport roles always (one spell can usually wipe out an entire party) while Green spirits are good for defending and support, as their support magic can boost up your stats. Black Spirits are good for Support, to cut off enemy magic, and attack if you want, but they're weaker than Blue spirits, and their attacks are not as hard hitting. Also, all of these: attacks, magic, defense, have a limited amount of uses. You can also shuffle around the priorities of when they will be executed. They can be replenished, however, by going into towns.
The thing here is that all characters have a mind stat. You can think of it as their sanity, if you will, like in Shadow Hearts. Every time you kill an enemy, your mind will go down. You need a high mind in the game in order to unlock both the high level classes, and to get the two characters that join you in the world of Aselia (I forgot the exact name of Aselia's world). So you need to balance things as to who kills who. Also, needless to say, you need a high mind to get the good ending with the girl that you wish. There are ways of restoring mind, however.
Also, you can build buildings with Ether, which will make your life easier. There are training halls where you can level up your Spirits according to various trainers, there are fortresses which give your troops additional parameter bonuses when engaging the enemy in them, there are Mana converters which convert your accumulated Mana into Ether, etc.

Now that somehow reminds me of Sengoku Rance's gameplay, though replace the "conquering other nations" part with "conquering the rest of Japan". Both seem to have superb replayability...

I'll really need to look for other songs by her. I've been listening to too much trance/cutesy pop nowadays..
(Thank you I've/KOTOKO and Saori Sakura..

Is it bad if I imagine Shana and Yuuji or Lousie and Saito with those?
