Well, to explain my reasoning for the elf-ear thing...
Irene has elf ears. This makes her easy to remember and sets her apart from Noel and Sophia. When we see those elf-ears, we think Irene. It's an extra item to tag with her angular face, which reinforces memory of her. It might also imply, symbolically, certain things about her personality. (Maybe that she's inscrutable, introspective, pragmatic, hardened and aloof? Basically an "elf"? *shrugs*) Whatever the case, it sure makes us think about
why she has elf ears and makes us attach some sort symbolism to her, which is enough to get the audience interested in her.
There is also one other Claymore that I know of with elf-ears...
