The BETA themselves are made of Carbon; given what happens to the areas around their Hives, their primary interest is in Carbon "deposits", with other minerals as secondary. The Tank-classes were probably more interested in the "rich" Carbon "core" of that TSF than the TSF itself.
The BETA do respect living things, as the Superior in Alternative notes, it's just that they're hard-programmed into not seeing us as such; it's not like they choose to see us as minerals, they're literally incapable of coming to a conclusion themselves that we (hence they) are more than resources (or machines).
