Its as if you stopped paying attention to the parts of their battle scattered from chapter 462 to 474.
Anyways, they really did stalemate--with Ishida's help no less. The fight was going no where fast after Ginjou's first release. In fact, he felt confident enough to claim he could "easily wipe the floor with" the both of them. So I can sort of see why Ichigo went Bankai first.
