The concept of a national idol no longer exists/is no longer possible in current day Japan with the heavy commercialization and segmentation of the market.

It was because of this, they set the time to the mid 80's when there were idols with exorbitantly high national acceptance, partially due to the lack of segmentation of the pop culture market.

Though, it appears there are inconsistencies in the presentation because of this.
