Well besides the suprise factor, I think is also partly because of a heavy focus on the character and their relationships to each other that make it seem slice-of-life. Hell I love this development of SFF slice-of-life series.

Spoiler for Me just being silly:
Each girl receives their own mech, which is embodied with the powers of each girl's goddess. In order to operate said mechas, they have to sing "praise songs" respective of each goddess. However, they're conflicted by their newly appointed duty to protect their town (which is under attack specifically because of an ancient ritual and/or godly war that took place there hundreds of centuries ago) because in order to perform this job fully, they must neglect all of their loved ones and favorite activities. Also, it is impossible to protect EVERYONE due to the enemy's sheer strength, so whenever people do die, one or two of them takes it REALLY hard. That or maybe everything that happens in the preview is their life prior to receiving these powers, but they actually have a GIANT breakup and they all hate each other now, so at least 50% of the series is dedicated to them rekindling their friendship (which is necessary because they can't do much of anything without their "hearts being connected~").
It'll be Rinne X Macross F x Symphogear x Kamisama Dolls (with maybe a splash of Eureka Seven for flavor) disguised by it's slice-of-life prologue!
+5,000 points if yuri that is more-than-just-implied is involved.
Okay, speaking SERIOUSLY now, I'm looking forward to this show. It should be pretty relaxing.

If that is not the plot of this series, I seriously want someone to actually do an anime like that.
Espically if the Yuri is a heavy as we are hoping for. Hell from your plot, I feel that you need to add some
Kannazuki no Miko too to your mix.
Heh, I am glad my crazy early theory of "then boom giant robots and Yuri show up" is influencing everyone here.

On the safe side, you should probably start a manga thread due to the rules on non-anime based spoilers in anime threads.
Edit: Just noticed MisaoFan already started one in the manga and light novel section.
Edit 02: Right now ANN is listing the start date as 5 April.
