hrmm... Darker than Black is quite a good show, its done by bones, who brought you eureka 7, Fma, its pretty dark and gritty, romance is a side plot where as action is the main focus, it has many dark themes but still is very light. Also you should check out Kara no Kyoukai its really gritty a lot of moral questions, the characters are pretty interesting, the male lead is somewhat a slacker or more of the oblivious type, both are really well animated.
