Caprico never fought Gray, Zoldeo was the one fighting Gray and the rest in Capricorn's body. Not only that but he was also using magic that allowed him to control humans (something Capricorn cannot do now) which was why Loki/Leo was the one to stay behind to fight him.
Saying that Capricorn is stronger than Gray is completely false. If anything Gray defeated the strongest of the 7 kins (Ultear) which would actually make him one of the top members of team A.
