I don't really think you can call what they had a conventional relationship in the first place. What looks like a breakup might not even be that, but it's always vague, so who knows.
But it certainly seems like the fire has been lit in Zenkichi again, sorta. He acknowledges that he's been left behind again, meaning he'll have to work his hardest to get back up there.
