i'm pretty sure Sumire always knew that Kitamura liked her, but she was putting her feelings on hold for his sake. she said something along the lines of "if i responded to his feelings he would give up everything to be with me." or she would give up her dreams to be with him. for the sake of both of them, she had to reject his feelings. which makes her a stronger character than Taiga takes her for. Taiga assumes she's running away from his feelings, but i think she's getting them loud and clear and has the will power to stand up against the urge.
and it makes me sad at the inevitableness of the slow phaseout of Ami.. such a better character than Minorin.
