I thought it was fairly obvious since EP2. Just as 1986 Rokkenjima is a game between Beatrice and Battler, 1983 Hinamizawa was the game board between Bernkastel and Lamdadelta. Bernkastel was "born from that world" the same way Meta Battler was born out of the events from Legend. Rika was Bern's piece, and Takano was Lambda's. However Bern "started with all her pieces on my side of the board" and Hanyuu was able to magically remember that Takano was the bad guy, Akasaka magically started coming back to Hinamizawa because his wife and child was fine, and the rest just fell into place from there. Rika makes it to July, Bern is free from the game, Lambda defeated. From there, they meet up with Beato for some more fun.

Very close, but apparently not quite true as revealed in later games; then again, we had no way of knowing exactly what happened when those games came out.

Rika was not Bern's piece. Bern was Rika. Or rather, she was an entity born of Rika from all the times she died. That's why it was so shocking for her to become a witch when she originally wasn't; she was originally just a lowly piece. Takano certainly was Lambda's piece, but Rika was the piece of Featherine, Lambda's real opponent, who was apparently born from Hanyu (if I remember correctly, she came from the piece of Hanyu's horn that was chipped off).
