L*S anime adaptation was unusual... its source didn't use "pop culture references" for the funny - that was grafted on by KyoAni (as was the entire Lucky Channel bit). Paniponidash was a bit different in that the source already made a fair amount of cultural reference gags. I shudder to think if something like AzuDa or Sketchbook had been buried in such stuff (at least Sketchbook restrained itself to homaging its "sister" ARIA). Hyakko actually comes to mind more often watching this series.
As for GA, I don't think this series is "brilliant" but it does seem to be a nice escapist bit of happy fluff and they seem to be staying relatively true to the source. I wonder if they're using this as a test flight for doing the mangaka's other deeper work - Kuro (Shoulder-a-Coffin Girl).
