I would highly recommend it. While your opinions may differ on this anime, much of the Muv Luv franchise's popularity is derived from that visual novel trilogy; this anime only offers a brief taste of what first made Muv Luv popular.
If I recall, people have posted the whole trilogy on Youtube subbed.
