Although original, you can tell that the director's been toying around with this "world" for a long time now.
The first time you see this is in the Digimon movie Bokura no War Game. The second time is from this short movie he made for Louis Vuiton. They're all very similar.
I guess in a way you can consider Summer Wars a Bokura no War Game remake. The style is the same so is the general plot line, except a lot more fleshed out (with a family twist) and a hundred times better
.
What really surprised me in this movie is how he captured all these subtle emotions that are just absolutely perfect.
Spoiler for spoilers for some scenes:
For example when the little baby girl was confused of what's going on. She didn't seem like a typical confused baby anime girl, she seems like a real confused baby girl. She's also absolutely freaking adorable when she said "敵で?".
It was also great when he captured how embarrassed Kenji was to come back to Natsuki's house again when he just made an epic speech about how he was lonely but he had a lot of fun.
Then when Wabisuke was talking to this other little girl and he showed her his iPhone then she closed her eyes in fright because she thought it was porn. I don't know, but I was so impressed by that scene. It just captured real life so well, the innocence, the warmth, the reality, the fun, ALL OF IT. That's some real skill right there.
AND FINALLY, the last scene when Natsuki was about to kiss Kenji. Freaking adorable. I usually find anime kisses sometimes cheesy or just don't delivery the emotions of a kiss properly. Either you feel like it's too much, or it's not there at all. Here it's perfect. It was great, every thing from the little details of her initiating it first subtly to her finishing it off with a cheek smooch. Even family members cheering them on in the background was a great touch.
Fabulous job. I always loved this guy and I'd be happy to see him up there with Miyazaki one day. I know he can do it!!!!
