If you really want to, you should start with the original series. I can't get my hands on it, and I admit that the quality of old episodes does irk me a bit
. If you're going to skip to the new series, then start with 9, because there are some stuff that tie in later, plus 9 was pretty good too.
Oh and I forgot to mention my favorite episode: The Girl in the Fireplace.
