I didn't watch any Sailor Moon until last year (or maybe the year before that) due to the Abridged version of the show (a very funny group SMA is). When they were taken down (briefly) by Youtube, I investigated the rest of the series to see what sort of jokes they might throw later on. In Japanese it gets fairly intense at times. People die. And it isn't even as violent as the manga from what I understand.
And this made for girls.
Mauretsu Pirates has tons of potental references in it. Most are not needed to be understood to enjoy what you are watching. The Sailor Moon references are all visual and may mean abolutely nothing. The Space Battleship Yamato references mean nothing, but they are fun as well.
