1st bullet penetrated mercury just because it was a stronger bullet,compared to submachine bullets and Kayneth didn't expect it?

And if Kayneth put up as strong mercury wall as he did the 2nd time, in their first battle , he would have been fried like in the second time?
I mean was it necessary for Kiritsugu to land a hit on Kayneth for the first time or not?
