yeah, it wouldn't make sense if you think of it from that perspective. Just think of it as one of those Gundam beams. Faster than a bullet, but slower than the speed of light.

I interpreted that section as the mother losing a part of her emotions during the operation as a side effect or guilt. I tried my best not to add in my own thoughts, but when I read that Maya was a bit frustrated about her own son's lack of love towards her, I just couldn't resist myself. Miyuki stated in the 1st arc that the very fact that her brother can still "love" is a miracle in itself. And personally, I can see that. Your father is always jealous, insecure, and trying to obstruct your future. Your mother thought you were a defect and therefore operated on you. When that failed, she sent you into hell in the underground research facility where you were tortured and pitted against other magicians in a fight to the death. If you died, oh well, you're a defect. If you survive, good job, you're a tool. I don't know about others, but if I had parents like that, I would be completely deluded about "love".
