From your comment, it seems like you either underestimate translation works or you think people who only read translation of classic works do not count as people who enjoy the said works. That doesn't matter. What matters is people are still drawn to read those classic works (translated in their own languages if necessary) which is contrary to what you said:
"nobody will actually bother to actually check that old stuff out."
As for myself, I've read
Robinson Crusoe,
Moby Dick and Jules Verne's works, among others.
