The Author's previous work(Ai Yori Aoshi) also changed towards the end of the series.
I've seen a lot of variation in the style in this story also. (The DragonBallZ hair still is hard to deal with.) As a former artist, and a lifelong student of art, I can see how the system of Mangaka/assistants could produce a lot of inconsistent results.
But the charm of the early art is gone. Perhaps the author wants a more troubled look to match the stories' plot.
