I don't think I've ever seen a dynamic like that carried off, at least not regularly. Generally, in these setups, I see this

A new girl arrives (Sheryl) and gets too much attention from the boy and in the end the girl(Ranka) is pushed by this to confess, but by that time, the boy has fully fallen for the other girl... I've seen that one so many times (granted, I haven't watched much harem stuff lately, so maybe it's changed). The Childhood friend almost always gets screwed over, especially if they're the shy type. Generally the theme is always "Fortune favors the bold".

It interesting to hear how much has changed. Thanks for the info guys.
