I obtained Wish your smile for Christmas (It's a really good manga)
here is a summary of the volume 1 based on the image (I don't speak japanese)
Spoiler for wish your smile volume 1:
Mintz, our main character is a darcsen boy. In the first chapter, we saw his family being kill by the explosion of his home caused by a missile.
Few years Later, he is an engineer during the war.
a tank kill one of his collegue, but, he is saved by the sniper Julius and the unity 7.
The rest of the volume concentrate on his training (the instructor is here) and his relation with Julius, Homer (who became his friend), but a also Cezary, who is a weak rookie like him.
Cezary is very weak, coward, and of course racist.
He dislike Mintz and bully him many times.
Julius act like a cold guy but, Mintz remind him his brother who is died. So he always finish by protecting him.
At the end of the volume one, Mintz discover that Julius have a Brother and Cezary seems wanting a revenge because he have been saved by Mintz in the previous battle.
There is somes element of a shonen ai manga (even a shower scene with Mintz and Homer), but I really like to see the war by a recruit point of view.
I also like the work made on all the recruit, who are more present than the main character of the game (Rosie, Alicia, Isara and Largo are just here few pages and Welkin just a chapter)
Homer also seems to have his masochist nature and act as the servant of Edy.

That depends on the variant of scanner you use. But I highly doubt a scanning device would be capable of damaging a piece of paper.
