Are they two separate games or are they simply names referring to two story arcs/chapters within the game?

What you said here is interesting. From first impressions alone and by the way the characters are portrayed, I figured the comparison would be the other way around.

It's like Meiya and Sumika are both "dark" and "light" in MuvLuv as much as Mitsuki and Haruka are "dark" and "light" in KGNE. And after hearing your comparison, they could be easily seen as "present" and "past" characters as much as Mitsuki and Haruka are.
