The Colts obviously thought that Pat McAfee is a valued player in terms of net field position. Finding a good punter is not as easy as your making it seem; it's more than just kicking the ball as hard as you can. You have to find someone who knows how to maintain enough air under the punt to allow teammates to get down the field to make a tackle on the returner for minimal gain or force a fair catch while having good distance at the same time. The special punters know how to counter punt to get the opposing team pinned deep in their own territory.
Also, McAfee has FG kicking experience from his college days. He'll probably be the player sent out should the Colts ever need a desperation super-long FG, like a 58-60 yarder.
