Where did you get that from? He only said that he's going to take punishment for his deeds. He never said anything about dying.

What don't you get about Johan's speech?
Pheles did change the situation. Kazumi wanted to stop the battle between Yuji and Shana and Pheles did do that. Johan was talking some sense into Yuji, while Pheles held back Shana. That Yuji and Shana started fighting again after they left is out of Pheles' hands.
