Doubt I can help since I don't have a PS3 but I used to run into a similar problem (screen didn't go black it just sorta jumped for a second) anytime I sent a 480i signal through a component cable on my hdtv. Is there an internal setting you have to set in the PS3 menus to set it to progressive scan? Don't think ps2 had one, but both xbox's did.
