I think Arachne's
Spoiler
:
death made sense under the circumstances. She didn't fight back because she wasn't expecting Asura to turn on her, having been convinced that she had his trust. Until he was snatched from the castle, Asura had been in the same place he'd been for several episodes; in his bed at Arachne's side. There was no reason in Arachne's mind for her to employ a fail-safe or further manipulation.
Considering this is the man who a while ago was claimed to fear
everything
, she should have known better from the start. The Heretic over-reached herself when it came to using her pet Kishin.
As for the rest of it - What else would Shinigami do but get between his people, including his son, and Asura's attack? Without understanding the dialogue I'm not sure, but it looked as though up until that fatal point neither god were causing one another too much damage. Even the Soul Resonance attack wasn't having much of an effect. And these are supposedly the strongest pair in the series. At this point I would be questioning Asura's fate had the Demon Slayer wavelength not been established a while ago.
