Both releases use the same filtered source and almost the same bitrate. Nevertheless, the fact that h.264 is the superior codec leads to more details, less noise and less ringing in the mkv version. Softsubs also make sure that there's no noise around the subtitles.

If you have the CPU to play h.264 encodes (processor of 1 GHz or up) and don't NEED avis for other reasons (like wanting to use a standalone player), get the mkv.
