Because the Q&A thread is for fact-based questions and answers, I can't really offer much that isn't speculative in nature, but I can say that it is...
- based on a popular game series,
- that features a variety of beautiful heroines ("Who would you choose?"),
- and is famed for a shocking plot development that occurs shortly after you quit watching the show (eps. 18-20).
At the time when it aired, the "fanclubs" in the show encouraged a lot of those watching the anime to similarly cheer for their favourite heroine, resulting in some pretty massive fanclub wars that forever changed the posting rules on this forum.
So I'm not sure if it's more the content, or more the fan phenomenon that surrounded it, but it remains one of the most well-known and commonly-referenced bishoujo game anime adaptations of all time.
