Spoiler for DofD:
Yami (or possibly YOMI, I'd have to check the books) sent him an invitation to the DofD (Desperate fight of Disciples), and after much soul searching, Kenichi decided to accept, forming the Ryouzampaku team with Miu. Shimpaku Rengou, many of whose members had been training hard for the anticipated showdown with YOMI, also go (Ryouzampaku refuses them passage on their boat, but Hermit provides a yacht.) The masters of Ryouzampaku aren't just there to cheer Kenichi and Miu on - Sakaki is on assignment from the Japanese government to deal with the renegade master of South Pacific island where the tournament takes place, and he links up with an old aquaintance of his, Jennie Gray, an FBI agent that has already infiltrated the island. Together with Shigure, they free an American recon team from the island's dungeon, who proceed to sabotage the island's defenses to let in a strike force. Kenichi's masters are all busy elsewhere, fighting the island's defenders, while the final battle of the tournament is unfolding.
(Shimpaku Rengou made it to the semi-finals before withdrawing (if they had stayed in, their opponent would have been Shou, and he'd already taken out most of their strength in a night-time confrontation after he had abducted Miu), and the fighting breaks out as they head for the harbor.
